Starting today, fans can make peer-to-peer payments using Bitcoin at Botev Plovdiv FC’s stores and fan stands during matches in Bulgaria’s top flight Parva Liga.

The club also plans to expand Bitcoin payments to ticket sales and online stores, making it easier for supporters to interact with the club.

The club’s president, Anton Zingarevich, expressed excitement about the integration and potential of the Lightning Network, saying they expect Bitcoin payments to become as ubiquitous in daily life as the Internet.

He believes that this move is in line with the club’s vision and brings great convenience to fans and stakeholders.

Bitcoin adoption is enabled by a partnership with BTCPay Server, a reputable Bitcoin payment processor known for its open source architecture, secure infrastructure, and low transaction fees.

This shift towards Bitcoin and decentralized technology reflects the pioneering efforts of Royal Bedford, a UK-based football club that was the first in the world to adopt Bitcoin.

Royal Bedford Football Club chairman Peter McCormack praised Botev Plovdiv FC’s decision, stressing that adopting Bitcoin can bring success to the club while raising awareness about cryptocurrencies.

McCormack, who integrated Bitcoin at Royal Bedford in 2021, believes that Bitcoin’s unique properties can serve as a “cheat code for life.”

He predicts more football and sports teams will follow suit and adopt the “cheat code” strategy to build their clubs on a solid financial footing.

To celebrate the adoption of cryptocurrency, Botev Plovdiv FC is allowing fans attending their home match against Lokomotiv Plovdiv to pay using Bitcoin and the Lightning Network.
