Bitfinex encounters information security incident

electronic currency exchange Bitcoin said it experienced a “minor” information security incident after one of its customer support staff was attacked earlier this week (October 30 to November 5).

The company explained in a statement on November 4 that this resulted in a series of phishing attacks targeting Bitfinex users, but the damage was minimal.

“A small portion of our customer support team contained partial, incomplete and outdated information that was accessed by an individual or group through fraudulent conduct by a customer support employee.”

The company added that fortunately, customer support agents do not have “super privileges” and therefore have limited access to support tools and help tickets.

The exchange stressed that its systems were not compromised and no customer funds were lost.

Bitcoin Add to:

“No server, wallet or database infrastructure was accessed. Customer assets on the platform were never at risk and password information was not accessible. Most of the affected customer accounts were empty or inactive.”

Although Bitfinex said the issue has now been “resolved,” it is still investigating the incident, the information that was compromised, and is contacting affected customers.

The company has notified law enforcement of the matter and will work with investigative agencies to track down those behind the phishing attack.

Bitfinex reiterates:

“We have a strong track record of successfully convicting individuals who have attempted to attack our business in the past.”

The incident occurred despite the exchange regularly reviewing its security procedures and requiring all employees to undergo cybersecurity training.

Bitfinex was established in Hong Kong in 2012. Jean-Louis van der Velde has been the company’s CEO since 2013.

Bitfinex ranks 17th among all cryptocurrency exchanges in CoinGecko’s “Trust Score” index. Its platform has been visited more than 800,000 times in the past month.
